Spot on analysis. We are asking the same questions where I teach, as we go through cycles of recruiting students of color while we still struggle with not having enough faculty and staff of color. The only thing I'd add (and this may not fly in higher ed discussions) is that commitments to increasing faculty diversity not only reflect a shift in the priorities of leadership, but also actually having awesome faculty of color creates further, deeper shifts in the the culture of the institution itself. Beyond the (hopefully) obvious benefits to students of having these faculty as role models and clear signals of their own potential, their presence in significant numbers and activities outside the classroom in the daily life of the institution serve, over the years, to shift its overall culture in ways that students can't. The culture of "whiteness" and ideology of white privilege is much older and more entrenched than more recent ideological incarnation of the conservative and liberal split. Maybe this is why changing it is more threatening and harder to achieve, even for accomplished bridge builders like Kagan.hierospacehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11690935871262181138noreply@blogger.com
